So this is a Super Mario birthday party we threw a while back. Little guy became obsessed with Mario everything and we really wanted to throw him his first official party.
Most of the parties were only with the immediate family but this time he wanted one where he would invite others. Mind you, I have NEVER thrown a party and I’ve only had two birthday celebrations growing up so I wanted to give it a try with this Mario themed birthday party.
*Also, keep in mind that this was a small party as I needed to give it a go before going bigger next time. *If* I plan on throwing a bigger party next time.

Super Mario Birthday Party
I gathered all my supplies ahead of time for this Super Mario party, but didn’t put anything together (other than me cutting out some times) until the night before as it was a surprise. Don’t do that. I waited until the birthday boy was asleep and work on it until 4a.m. *insert crying emoji here*
Decorations
It most primary in indoor party. After searching Pinterest for ideas, I decided to create King boo as it seemed simple to do and since the little guy liked how Mario and Luigi defeated their enemies.
I got the Boo Ghost face printable template here and printed it on sticker paper, and stuck them on some giant balloons. (find it at Walmart here)
For the tongue, hands, and crown, I freehanded them and cut them out using printer paper and colored cardstock that I like to always have on hand for crafts.
For the coins, I used some small yellow plates and hung them on either side of King Boo. I put two together using double-sided tape, but you could also use hot glue. Then I added some masking tape so they look like classic Mario coins.
Finally, I hung everything with fishing line.
Now, the image above is from the shop we ordered the printable banner from. You simply type in the name you want on the order, and the shop will send your order within 1-2 days.
I also ordered a printable 3D number template from another shop as part of the party decor. I printed everything on colored cardstock paper again. But if I were to do it again, I’d try and go bigger.
The garland wasn’t big but it would have taken me forever to blow up the balloons by myself if it wasn’t for the balloon pump I grabbed. Definitely a great investment for future parties especially if you plan on using a ton of balloons.
For the small ghosts, I used the same printable template as King Boo but made sure the hands were longer in length. I made the balloon garland using a garland kit and command hooks.
For the Mario star pinata, I cut small strips of black washi tape and used that as the eyes.
I also put together some classic Mario blocks around the place for kids to play with. You can find the block templates here, just make sure to print them on white cardstock.
Entertainment
We set up a projector and had the Super Mario movie playing. We also had a soundtrack ready to play for the kids if needed.
Outside we set out a swing, chalk, and a simple bean bag toss game. It was a pretty chill party as we only had a small number of people we invited.
We also had a video game set up in the office room. Giving the kids a space to play some games.
Food and drinks
For our main meal, I made some simple sandwiches using hawaiian rolls instead of regular bread. We also ordered pizza.
People are rarely on time for parties, so we made sure to have it delivered about an hour after our start time – which ended being a good idea, as this ensured the pizza was nice and warm for the guests instead of it just sitting on the counter.
For healthy snacks I kept coming across the fire flower from Mario on Pinterest and decided to do just that.
I also made some fruit cups that consisted of watermelon, jicama, and cucumbers. And set aside some limes and Tajin to go with it.
I also set aside a big tub of cheese puffs, googled a quick image of Fire Mario, and taped that right on the tub.
For drinks for the kids, we did water and juice boxes. We don’t drink soda at home, but we made sure to have soda and few adult drinks for the adults.
Cake
Little guy was a fan of chocolate, so I placed an order for a chocolate cake from a local bakery and a mix of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes for guests to have another option.
I got the cake toppers from Etsy and printed it on cardstock paper. Then taped them onto some toothpicks.
The cupcake toppers I made myself. I googled an image of Luigi’s hat since that was little guy’s favorite character along with a mustache and edited it using Gimp on my computer. But you can also order them here.
Mario Themed Birthday Party Favors & Extras
For favors, I grabbed some paper lunch bags and printed a question mark I found on google on sticker paper for the front. I wanted to cut each one out, but due to time constraints, I simply cut out a square shape and stuck it on the bag.
We tried going to healthier route and include Bear fruit rolls, applesauce pouches, and turkey mini sticks inside along with a few other treats.
Also, right on the cupcake stand, I added some banana chips as a nod to Donkey Kong.
For extra treats, I made some DIY Toad desserts. I used marshmallows, a fondue maker, white chocolate, food coloring, and white and black icing. Then placed them in some cake pop wrappers.
I would make these at least a day in advance because you can’t add the icing until the chocolate cools and hardens which took FOREVER in my case.
*You can find the Mario stickers here. But keep in mind, that once you place a sticker down it’s not removable.
To add to the Mario themed birthday party, I also and wrapped some Hershey bars with an old-school printable Nintendo candy bar label. Not that most children would recognize them but the grown-ups definitely did.
I made a couple Bob-ombs and placed them around the house. They were made using balloons, yellow cardstock paper for the feet, white sticker paper for the eyes, and pipe cleaners for the wick.
